JANE MULFINGER: Device for Irregular Apparitions, 1997
35’x15’x12’, 100lbs. upholstery feathers, fans, light, protective clothing
Hanes Art Centre Gallery, UNC, Chapel Hill, North Carolina
Upholstery feathers are propelled by industrial fans in an enclosed space. Every two hours, an individual dons a beekeeper’s helmet and coverall to maintain even distribution of feathers. The audience is able to view the work from the large glass window. Words in large text appear backwards as feathers cling to the clear adhesive: “right time, right place.” Numerous passers-by attempt to enter the blizzard-like conditions during the exhibition, desiring full immersion into the potentially spiritual space.
