JANE MULFINGER: I Battuti Bianchi 1991,
2nd-hand white clothing, cane, aluminum, rope, 15' diameter
"An English Summer," The Basilica Carignano, Italy
A large cane framework resembling a hot air balloon supports a sewn skin of white second-handclothing. This work approaches ideas of ascendance and the human desire to reach the heavens through both scientific and spiritual means.
The Basilica Carignano was built in the 1600s by the Savoy family for a powerful religious sect, I Battuti Bianchi, "those clothed in white that beat (themselves)."
